Public Service Announcement: Raccoon Rabbies Vaccine
The US Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Wildlife Services, along with the Georgia Department of Public Health, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be implementing an oral rabies vaccination (ORV) program to immunize wild raccoons to stop the spread of the raccoon rabies variant through Georgia.
Beginning on Thursday, Oct. 3, approximately 88,000 coated sachet baits will be dispersed, by helicopter, in the area. Fixed-wing aircraft will be used to distribute an additional 88,000 baits beginning on Monday, Oct. 14. Baits contain Raboral V-RG (Merial, Ldt), an oral rabies vaccine. The target areas will include all of Dade and Catoosa Counties, large portions of Chattooga, Walker, and Whitfield Counties, and a small portion of Murray County.
If you would like additional information, you may contact the school. In the event of human contact with the bait/vaccine, call the Northwest Georgia Public Health at 706.295.6650 or the USDA/APHIS/Wildlife Services at 706.546.5637.
